Soccer Lessons

Qaun always had his eye on the ball. He knew when to stop and kick the ball. He made it look easy to stop the ball in a fast motion. But when it came to my partner and I, we struggled.

The Reading Room

Walt: discuss the problems and the solution in sequence.

In the story, The Reading Room there are two problems.

The first problem is Lisa sneaking into the bathroom to finish her book about Mark being lost in the sandstorm. But she can’t finish her book because her sister Kathy is wanting to have a shower. So she can go to the movies.

The last problem is that Kathy is wanting to have a shower so she can wash her hair. Kathy can’t have a shower because Lisa is reading her book in a quiet place where no one can disturb her.

The Vile Vendor

In this game all you have to do is to choose which one is Impossible, Unlikely, Equally, Likely and Certain. For me it was pretty hard when I had to fill the vile vendor. I would really like Mrs Ramkolowan to teach me how to fill the vending machine. I want her to teach me because it is confusing.

Character Study - Queen of the Barn

Alan is a very interesting character in this story. He has a lot of qualities of himself. That is why I chose Alan.

1. Alan is a caring character. Alan is caring boy because he cared for his pet Daisy. He cared for her because she was ran over. She flew by the drain and her leg was a mess. So he ran to her and picked her up with jacket under Daisy.

2.  Alan is a very very hard worker. He is a hard worker because he worked for a part time job. He did the paper run. Every time he did the paper run he would earn 20 dollars from his parents. With that money he would buy clothes. Then with the leftover money he would saves it to buy himself a radio - controlled plane.

3. Alan takes responsibilities. He took a big responsibility when his cat entered an accident. Without Alan telling his parents he took Daisy to the vet straight away. He had his own money that he saved up.

4. Alan is always focused. He is focusing on saving money to buy him a radio - controlled plane and he is not depending on his parents to buy his own things. Plus is he focused on Daisy checking on her every week.

That is why Alan is very interesting. Alan is my favourite character in the story - Queen of the Barn. Only if I can read this story all over again and again.

Popplet - The Skin

Without Cantik :(

Walt: write a report / narrative.

In Wellington Zoo a Sumatran tiger that was put down arrived from Burger’s zoo in the Netherlands. The staff took care of her for a very long time because Sumatran tigers that live in the wild live until 10 years but Cantik lived for 21 years. Then she died. Cantik suffered malignant adrenal tumors and severe arthritis.

The Sumatran tiger have short powerful legs, huge paws and a large powerful jaw. Tigers fail at  least 90% of the time to catch their prey when they are hunting. Cantik’s name really means ‘beautiful’ in Indonesian language. Like a human fingerprint, no two tigers have the same pattern of stripes on their coats. There are only a few hundred Sumatran tigers left in the world. If we do not look after them right then their species will be extinct. They mostly eat water buffalo, ambo deer, buffalo, wild pigs and antelope.

I think that Sumatran tigers should receive euthanize medication so that they can die painless. Instead of them dying with a lot of pain and for them to go through all their stress. Wellington zoo should put on a show all about Cantik, so that everyone can remember Cantik. The main thing I will miss about Cantik will be her name.

Ancient Egyptian - The Written Word

Walt: look for information.

Hieroglyphics

1. The word “Hieroglyphics” is called “sacred carving” in Greek language.

2. When the ancient Greeks arrived in Egypt, they saw carvings carved on tombs and temple walls.

3. Hieroglyphics were symbols that represented everyday life and objects.

4. When time went past, new signs and symbols were created that represented very familiar sounds.

5. Number hieroglyphics were developed to calculate mathematical problems.

Scribes

1. The scribe’s main tool was called a Kalamos, it was made from a six inch reed.

2. The end of the Kalamos was chewed by the scribe’s. The scribe’s chewed on the Kalamos so it will form into a brushlike tip.

3. It was believed that a scribe’s job was more similar to drawing and painting.

Papyrus

1. It was hardly a coincidence that the first examples of paper, called papyrus, was date from 3000 BC, the time when Egyptians began to write.

2. Papyrus, made from the plant papyrus, is a triangular - shaped reed that used to grow along the Nile River.

3. Although the earliest hieroglyphics were cut into stone monuments or inscribed onto clay tablets, both surfaces were hard to write on, heavy to transport, and difficult to store.

A scary start

Walt: write a story in sequence.

One misty dawn morning Jelsma was full of fright. He told his friend Tan-Charlie that he was pusillanimous. He felt like disgorging in the bathroom.

After a little while Mikayla had told Jelsma to be calm and relaxed. That when he finishes his spectacular jump Mikayla will buy him anything. Jelsma was so scared that he said he had huge eels sloping in his stomach. Mikayla felt sorry. Tan-Charlie told Jelsma that is was going to be okay only if he follows the instructions right.

Mary asked if Jelsma was ready to jump. “There is no time to talk you have to jump now” Jalal said. “You are going to be alright” said Tan-Charlie. Jelsma was ready to jump, but he told Jalal that he was filled with extreme fear and was shivering. That was a huge problem for Jelsma. But luckily Tan-Charlie and Mikayla was always encouraging him no matter what.

So Jelsma wiped his face and slapped himself clean. He was not scared any more, because we all encouraged him. Off went Jelsma as he flew with excitement. He felt like he already finished his jump. Jelsma was almost at the finish point until he pulled a string to let his parachute free. But suddenly he landed in some spice country.

Suddenly Jelsma smelt and saw spices. He thought he was in South Africa until he saw this sign saying “Welcome to South Africa”. Jelsma thought it was a nightmare until he woke up. It was all a dream he said to his self. “Oh no, it’s my jump today” screamed Jelsma.

The theme of this story is to never give up and to always give it a try.
